The Importance of the New Reservation System

Why the Change?

Let’s just talk really fast about the current experience if you go to Sand Harbor State Park on a Thursday to better understand why this change is necessary. Currently, if you look at their social sites, they are full of at-park capacity closures, and the boat launch lot is overflowing posts.

At 8:40 in the morning, there are already 20 cars lined up, and by 10:00 AM, the lot is completely full and closed for the day. An early morning at the beach shouldn’t be so stressful. This level of congestion can make your beach day less enjoyable, with little to no space along the water. Nevada State Parks Administrator decided to take part of a pilot program to launch the new system that requires advance reservations.

Traffic at Lake Tahoe Sand Harbor

Nevada’s Goal

  • Overcrowding: With the increasing number of visitors, it was necessary to find a way to manage the influx.
  • Traffic Management: Reducing traffic congestion around day-use parks is crucial for safety and accessibility. The traffic in Lake Tahoe is a lot during rush hour and with people attempting to get into the beach and go to work its real tough.
  • Parking Management: Eliminate the cars parked along the highway due to overcrowding.
